I mentioned start stop and change. Years ago this was big. This was high level learning. Today, I doubt you could get 100 people in a room, that defined the three words correctly.
Today start to most people has to do with time. What time they start work or have to be at class. Start is, the beginning of something. A movement, a change in direction.
One thing as a real scientist, that you have to realize, is that not much of anything, is not moving in our universe. So when we say start, we usually will be describing, a change in direction, of an apparently solid motionless object.
For instance, consider the Rocky Mountains. We consider them solid, unmoving objects. However they are spinning with the surface of the earth at about 1,000 feet per second. That is not even considering the earths orbit, and movement around the sun. So although we consider the Rocky Mountains solid, an unmovable object they are just a whizzing, whirling, electrical effect.
Now if we started moving the Rocky Mountains, ten feet closer to California, at 8:00:00 pm, for ten seconds to 8:00:10 pm at a speed of one foot per second. We would scientifically call that a change of ten feet. We could scientifically say that the mountain started to move at 8:00:00 pm and Stoped moving at 8:00:10 pm. That would all be scientifically accurate. We could also scientifically say that the mountain range changed its position by ten feet.
Now some individuals that do not really want to delve into the actual workings of things. would disagree. Because, if the mountains are spinning around the axis of the earth, we cannot call any other movement, a scientifically measured movement. And do not get me wrong without listing those variable, universal, movements, in any experiment we do, we would not be able to say we scientifically moved our mountain ten feet.
However for the purpose of learning and understanding. We assume you the reader understands the larger picture of movement in the universe, and even the smaller picture. If not, nothing could ever get done, or move forward. I know that when men gather for a good purpose, these phenomena of the universe do not cause much if any misunderstanding. However if you are with people who are not interested in knowledge, senseless debates will rage on and on, to no end.
When I start typing on my keyboard, my finger starts to move downward on a key. As my finger moves in the direction it started to move in, it changes its position, and of course changes, the position of the key I am striking. When the key is totally depressed, the key stops moving downward and in turn stops my finger. That is actually much too complicated an example to teach start stop and change. You have the spring under the key, that applies an opposite force to my finger. The predefined movement of the key stroke.
The truth is that in this universe movement, start, change, stop, is complicated, no matter how you slice it up. This is very important to realize. Most today never stop what they are doing, to start, to change, their understanding of the simple basics around them.
With everything moving around us today at high speed, we almost never figure out what started it moving. With it already moving, you just start to learn ways to avoid being hurt by all the movement. However we almost never figure out, who or what started it, where it started from, what is changing it, can it be changed, and what might or might not stop it?
In that movie about the balls striking one another. You can see that if you had a lot of the right sized balls, thousands, millions of balls if necessary, with spaces between the balls, that we could stop an army tank that was hurled at them. The reason is start. To start moving those balls that are made up of atoms, and the atoms that are made up of particles of electricity. We have to start, a lot of particles moving, changing. The truth in this universe, is that one particle, equal to another particle, cannot transfer all of its energy to the other equal particle. It just cannot happen. The particle that is moving, changing its position, will follow the particle, that it is starting to move. Therefore not delivering all its energy to the second particle. I am saying energy here, that is debatable. But for now that is a good term.
That is where "energy conservation" comes from. "Energy" is not used up in mechanical reactions, it is just redirected. Newton was correct about this, and equal and opposite reactions, or perpetual motion.
No movement ("energy"), is ever lost in this universe, it is just redirected, altered to become some form of radiation, detected as a radiation, rather then physical movement, sound, heat, light, x-rays, gravity, radio.
If you noticed the chaotic movement in that movie about the balls, when two balls with a space between them is struck by a third ball. You might be able to imagine what that might do to flowing ambient radiation moving through the substance that is made up of an infinite number of particles. It causes different velocity emissions and pulsed emissions. That create all the radiations we detect from matter.
Back to that movie of the two balls with a space between them. You can see that the Q ball does not wish to stop changing (moving), even though it strikes an equal ball. The Q ball only imparts some of its movement to the ball it strikes. The Q ball continues to change its position after striking an equal ball. So we know that change has some "power", or ability to persist, through time, or over time, that resists being stopped. We also know that stop is pretty powerful, each stopped object wishes to stay that way. In order to start an object moving, you have change the velocity of the object that is approaching it, to move it. The moving object will negatively accelerate as it approaches a stopped object to transfer energy or movement to the stopped object.
You really need to do some home experiments or experiments at a pool hall with a loose rack of billiard balls and tight rack of billiard balls. Hitting each of the racks respectively, with the Q ball. To totally get a solid understanding of start, change and stop. This is how the universe really works and can be really understood.
